It seems like it was only yesterday that we were wringing our hands waiting for SAP to add Internet Explorer 9 support to BusinessObjects. But alas that was an eternity ago in 2011.
Since then, Microsoft launched Microsoft Edge in 2015, replaced its proprietary EdgeHTML rendering engine with Chromium in 2020, and finally retired its predecessor, Internet Explorer, in 2022. Apple introduced Safari for Windows in 2007 only to discontinue it in 2012.
We also survived Google Chromageddon in 2019.
Along the way, we watched the Java browser plug-in die a slow death. Google Chrome dropped support first, followed by Mozilla Firefox, while Internet Explorer remained the final mainstream holdout until its retirement. SAP delivered BI 4.2 SP3 in 2016, the first release in which the HTML version of Web Intelligence could truly go head-to-head with its Java applet counterpart. A few years later, SAP retired the Java applet altogether, introducing a new Fiori-based Web Intelligence with BI 4.3
